Using Practice Actions

What Are Practice Actions?

Practice Actions are short, focused practice videos (2–4 minutes) that are the real game changer in intensives. While you get the "big" weekly lesson video, Practice Actions are where the magic happens for your actual practice.

Why Practice Actions Matter

Practice Actions are designed to:

  • Reinforce learning: Help you practice the week's lesson without adding new material
  • Reduce overwhelm: Short videos mean focused practice sessions
  • Build consistency: Released throughout the week to keep you practicing regularly
  • Provide structure: Give you clear, actionable practice steps

How Practice Actions Work

Each week includes three Practice Actions that complement the main lesson:

Format

  • Short videos: 2–4 minutes each—little to no talking
  • Play-along format: Practice with Willie—just play along
  • Focused content: Each Practice Action targets a specific aspect of the week's lesson

Release Schedule

Practice Actions are released throughout the week:

  • Not all at once: They're spaced out to prevent overwhelm
  • Check your dashboard: Each Practice Action shows its release date
  • Build on each other: They progress logically through the week's material

Finding Practice Actions

You can find Practice Actions on your Intensive Dashboard:

  1. Go to your Intensive Dashboard
  2. Look at the "Week Progress" section
  3. Below the Main Lesson card, you'll see Practice Action cards
  4. Each card shows:
    • Practice Action title (e.g., "Week 1 - Practice Action #1")
    • Release date (when it becomes available)
    • "Watch Lesson" link to access the video
    • Completion indicator (orange checkmark when completed)

How to Use Practice Actions

To get the most from Practice Actions:

1. Watch the Main Lesson First

Always watch the weekly main lesson before starting Practice Actions. The Practice Actions reinforce what you learned in the main lesson.

2. Practice Along with Willie

These videos are designed for you to play along:

  • Follow along as Willie demonstrates
  • Play at the same tempo
  • Focus on the specific technique or concept being practiced
  • Don't worry about perfection—focus on understanding and applying

3. Repeat as Needed

Practice Actions are meant to be repeated:

  • Watch and practice multiple times
  • Each repetition builds muscle memory and understanding
  • Return to them throughout the week
  • Use them as warm-ups or focused practice sessions

4. Track Your Progress

Mark Practice Actions as complete when you've practiced them:

  • This helps you see your progress
  • Shows which Practice Actions you've worked through
  • Helps you stay organized and motivated

Practice Tips

To maximize your Practice Action sessions:

Set Up Your Practice Space

  • Have your piano/keyboard ready
  • Ensure good lighting and comfortable seating
  • Minimize distractions
  • Have the video easily visible

Practice Mindfully

  • Focus on one thing: Each Practice Action focuses on a specific concept—concentrate on that
  • Go slowly: Don't rush—take your time to understand and execute
  • Listen actively: Pay attention to the musical examples and demonstrations
  • Be patient: Mastery takes time and repetition

Build a Routine

  • Practice Actions are released throughout the week—use them to build a consistent practice routine
  • Set aside time each day or every other day
  • Make Practice Actions part of your regular practice schedule

Practice Actions vs. Main Lessons

Understanding the difference helps you use both effectively:

Main Lesson Practice Actions
10–20 minutes 2–4 minutes
Teaching and explanation Practice and application
Released weekly Released throughout the week
Introduces new concepts Reinforces learned concepts
Watch and learn Play along and practice

Common Questions

Do I have to complete all Practice Actions?

While not mandatory, completing all Practice Actions significantly improves your learning. They're designed to reinforce the main lesson and build your skills progressively.

Can I skip ahead?

It's best to follow the release schedule. Practice Actions build on each other and complement the weekly lesson. Skipping ahead might mean missing important foundational practice.

What if I don't understand a Practice Action?

If a Practice Action is unclear:

  • Re-watch the main lesson for that week
  • Review previous Practice Actions
  • Ask questions in the coaching session
  • Post in the community for help

How many times should I practice each Action?

There's no set number—practice until you feel comfortable with the concept. Some students practice each Action multiple times, others move on after a few repetitions. Focus on understanding and application rather than counting repetitions.

Getting the Most Value

Practice Actions are where you actually develop your skills:

  • Don't skip them: They're essential for building proficiency
  • Practice consistently: Regular practice with Actions builds real skill
  • Use them as building blocks: Each Action builds on previous learning
  • Enjoy the process: Short, focused practice is more enjoyable than long, unfocused sessions

Remember: The main lesson teaches you what to do. Practice Actions help you actually do it!
