The *MOST* important part of this lesson is mastering the accompaniment. You want your left hand accompaniment to be rock solid. Even though this is a really simple accompaniment, it is suggested to play it several dozen times in a row along with a metronome. Once you feel comfortable playing the accompaniment, add the licks and variations. Try to create more of your own variations over the accompaniment.
Rhythm is critical for improvisation. This lesson has a nice collection of rhythms that you can implement into your improvisations.
Building off of the accompaniment pattern we learned in TCI Exercise #1 and the rhythms from 3 Basic Rhythms, you'll now learn how to create even more licks to expand your improvisation.
